Q: Can you provide us with some tips on mowing our lawn?

lawn mowing tipsA: Nothing is more important to the health of your lawn than proper mowing. There are five simple rules that will make a big difference.

–  Cut your lawn to a height of about 7.5 cms. (3 inches). This is especially important in the heat of the summer and for shade lawns. This longer height encourages deep root growth and creates shade that inhibits weed seed germination. The shade from taller grass is very important. Studies have shown that a dense grass canopy mowed at 7.5 cms. can control crabgrass populations by 80%. Short mowing heights are the number one cause of weak grass and weak grass provides the best opportunity for weeds to invade.

 – Cut no more than one third of the grass blade at any one time to avoid removing too much of the functioning green leaf.

– Keep the mower blade well sharpened to avoid tearing the grass blade. Tearing makes the grass more susceptible to disease.

– Mulch your clippings and leave them on the lawn. Mulched clippings provide moisture, improve the ability of your lawn to retain water and thus reduce watering needs.

mowing and lawn care tipsMulched clippings recycle nutrients back into the soil and can provide up to one third of the nitrogen requirements of a lawn. Leaving mulched clippings on your lawn saves time, reduces water consumption and saves money on fertilizer. Mulch mowing makes an important contribution to solving waste disposal problems as approximately 18% of the garbage that goes into landfills in North America is grass clippings.

– Cut the lawn when it needs it only. In the spring your lawn will need mowing every week. During the heat of the summer the grass slows its growth and mowing can be reduced to once every two weeks.

Dormancy is your lawn’s self-protection measure as temperatures rise. Avoid forcing growth by fertilizing or over watering and definitely do not cut your grass and stress it more. A healthy lawn can tolerate dormancy for up to six weeks without harm and will readily green up again with fall rains.

Avoid pulling your lawn in and out of dormancy as this can severely weaken the lawn. Grass growth will slow and speed up as weather dictates, so it is difficult to predict an exact schedule. Cutting frequency may increase again with the fall rains.
